7 Questions with John Paik
Name: John Paik
Current title: Executive Marketing Consultant
Current organisation: Advisor/Shareholder/Consultant
An avid lover of music, fashion, entertainment, sport and technology. I have 15+ years of experience in creative & strategic marketing as well as an all around understanding of how consumers have revolutionized & adapted within today’s culture.
Using my experiences, relationship building and knowledge to help build brand growth for organizations that I have served; from Nike, to consulting for key CPG brands, to investing in start-ups and being a part of advisory boards.
.
1. What have you found most challenging as a board member?
With the many intelligent, experienced leaders from all other parts of business; cohesively figuring out a strategy/path for the company to continue to build growth for the brand. Sometimes, we have members that are type A and some not...its again agreeing in our disagreements.
2. How did you become a board member? Can you please briefly tell the story?
It's the desire to help brands build growth, as I proactively volunteered my time in helping smaller companies locally, to getting the word of mouth of who I am and what I was capable of doing. Also, in social media, it helped me share my beliefs in marketing and storytelling; which as I posted more within linkedin, others would ask questions and we started to build a friendship and to help one another. That was one method of how I had the opportunity to apply, interview to become a board-member.
3. How do you structure your work days from waking up to going to sleep?
I have a daily routine...wake up early AM, meditate, exercise and then write down my list of things I need to get done from consulting, meetings, etc... Its helped me manage my time to adapt, structure my work life balance.
4. What's the most recent significant leadership lesson you've learned?
Having been blessed to have many mentors; leadership has been a learning experience....biggest lesson with everyone that I have in my life be consistent in stating: "If you want to try something...do it...then learn from it, even if it's an absolute failure" As an ex-Nike alumni; the term "Just Do it" is exactly what needs to be done.
5. What are some of the keys to doing governance well in a organisation?
Everyone has a voice + Everyone is respected + Everyone listens + Also to have a mediator that will structure meetings from topic of discussions, towards agreements and execution/next steps.
6. How do you differentiate between the role of board member and the roles of CEO or executive team member of a organisation?
I look at it differently...being a board member vs. CEO or Executive leader is the same in leading, having a voice, listening and challenging. Being a leader will continue to utilize the 5 C's - Challenge, be involved in the Community, be Collaborative, be Competitive and be Consistent
7. What is one meaningful story that comes to mind from your time as a board member so far?
The one meaningful story that comes to mind is giving everyone a voice to be heard and speak. In my experiences, it's about how we as a brand can continue to help the community, but to be able to listen, learn about the concerns and focus on working as one team to help the brand grow within the community.
