Andrew Barnum is an experienced Designer, Educator-Academic and Songwriter. He lectures in Design at JMC Academy and Macleay College. He is the former Head of School of Billy Blue College of Design. Currently a PhD candidate at UTS exploring 'Conditions for Australian Songwriters.'
1. What have you found most challenging as a leader in the education sector?
The status of Arts & Culture within Australia
2. How do you structure your work days from waking up to going to sleep?
Music, news, breakfast, work - online interactions, designing, teaching, songwriting, farm chores, rest.
3. What's the most recent significant leadership lesson you've learned?
Hard-won College culture is not immune to commercial ambition.
4. What's one book that has had a profound impact on your leadership so far? Can you please briefly tell the story of how that book impacted your leadership?
Start with Why by Simon Sinek. In a classroom, the coalface of education validation, this framework creates a simple process to achieve value, and make something worth doing.
5. How do you find and keep great leaders in the education sector?
Candid, down-to-earth conversations with trusted colleagues.
6. What's most important as a leader in the education sector for developing a culture of wellbeing in your staff and students?
Honesty and sincere motivation.
7. What is one meaningful story that comes to mind from your time as a leader in the education sector so far?
When it became clear to me that to retain my integrity as a professional Educator and Designer, I would have to resign from my dream job.
