1. As a leader, how do you build trust with employees, customers and other stakeholders?
Start with lots of listening - and always remember the Golden Rule: Strategy first, tactics second. Never move until you know why you're moving.
2. What do 'VISION' and 'MISSION' mean to you? And what does it actually look like to use them in real-world business?
These are two of the most useless words in business development. Instead, use a Purpose Statement (Internal rallying cry) and tagline (external rallying cry). Done correctly, this is all you need to align sales, marketing, and product/service development and maximize sales.
3. How can a leader empower the people they're leading?
By understanding what's important to them, having them write their own PDPs, and working hard to catch them doing something right instead of trying to catch them doing something wrong.
4. Who are some of the coaches or mentors in your life who have had a positive influence on your leadership? Can you please tell a meaningful story about one of them?
My high school electronics teacher gave me two incredible gifts: the freedom to learn at my own, accelerated pace, and the phrase "Persevere without fear," which I life by to this day. My other coaches are people I haven't met, but who have been good enough to share their wisdom and experiences: Lee Clow, Simon Sinek, Gino Wickman, Michael Gerber, Alex and Leila Hormozi, Peter Drucker, Robert Kiyosaki, Josephe Campbell, and about 100 others.
5. Leadership is often more about what you DON'T do. How do you maintain focus in your role?
Ruthless time management, careful planning, a highly capable team, and the willingness and discipline to say, "No."
6. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Everyone plans differently. How do you plan for the week, month and years ahead in your role?
We follow the EOS Traction model. This allows us to live in a world defined by a 10-year objective, a 3-year goal, and a 90-day existence.
7. What advice would you give to a young leader who is struggling to delegate effectively?
Simplify. There is a 100% chance you're trying to do too much. Crawl, walk, run. Automate and delegate what you can without losing quality. Ask for help. Hire people smarter and more capable than you and reward them. Make sure to map out your success in the simplest form - this many widgets at this amount to achieve this level of profitability. Then add to the mix.
