The most influential leaders in catering globally today run the contract-catering majors, the airline and travel caterers, the live-event and venue specialists, and the independent houses that feed millions of people every single day. As of June 2026, that group spans figures like Dominic Blakemore at Compass Group, Thierry Delaporte at Sodexo, Christoph Schmitz at gategroup, and a wide roster of operators and creative caterers across thirteen countries who shape how the world eats at work, at events, and on the move.

Catering has quietly become one of the largest service industries on the planet, and the people who lead it rarely get the recognition that chefs and restaurateurs receive. The US catering market alone was valued at roughly $75 billion in 2024 according to industry reporting, and corporate demand keeps climbing, with around eight in ten companies ordering business catering at least monthly. Confidence is high heading into 2026, with 85 percent of event planners expressing confidence in the sector in the American Express 2026 Global Meetings and Events Forecast. Behind those numbers sit the leaders making decisions about food, logistics, sustainability, and the experience of millions of guests.

I put together this list to surface the people genuinely shaping catering across the world right now, rather than recycling the same handful of names that appear on every hospitality list. Each leader here was selected for a documented, fact-checked contribution to the field, from running the largest catering companies on earth to redefining what event dining can be. Some are household names inside the industry, and many deserve to be far better known outside it.

A note on what this list is and is not. It is not a ranking of social-media influence, and it does not assume every leader is an active online voice. It is a directory of people whose contribution to global catering is real and currently verifiable. If you lead a catering or hospitality organisation and you want the leadership of your teams to match the ambition of your food, you can hire Jonno White, author of Step Up or Step Out (10,000+ copies sold) and a Certified Working Genius Facilitator, to help. Reach out any time at jonno@consultclarity.org.

Why Does Catering Leadership Matter More Than Ever?

Catering leadership matters because catering is now a strategic business, not a back-of-house afterthought. The leaders on this list make decisions that touch what millions of people eat at work, in hospitals, in schools, at stadiums, on aircraft, and at the events that shape culture and commerce. Their choices on nutrition, sustainability, and service set standards that ripple across the entire food system.

The scale is genuinely vast. The US catering market was valued at roughly $75 billion in 2024 according to industry reporting, and the largest global operators each employ hundreds of thousands of people. Sodexo alone marks 60 years in 2026 and reports around 426,000 employees serving roughly 80 million consumers a day, a figure current as of 2026. When demand is this concentrated, the judgement and culture set by a relatively small group of leaders carries enormous weight.

The harder part is rarely the food. It is leading large, dispersed, often low-margin teams through constant change, from labour shortages to client-retention pressure to the shift toward plant-based and lower-waste menus. That is a leadership challenge as much as a culinary one, and it is exactly where strong team dynamics, clear accountability, and honest conversations separate the operators who thrive from the ones who stall. Organisations that want to build that capability can engage Jonno White to run executive offsites and Working Genius workshops for their leadership teams.

How This List Was Compiled

Each leader on this list was selected for a documented, fact-checked contribution to global catering, with their current role confirmed against primary sources such as the organisation's own pages, filings, or recent reporting. Selection was based on contribution to the field, not on how active anyone is on social media, so the list deliberately includes significant operators who keep a low public profile. Where a leader's current role could not be confirmed, they were left off rather than guessed at. During research, roughly a dozen widely cited names turned out to have changed roles, retired, or sold their businesses, and each of those was excluded. That is why this is an honest count of verified people rather than a padded number, and why the list will keep growing as more leaders become verifiable.

Leaders Running the World's Largest Contract Caterers

These leaders steer the largest catering and food-services companies on earth. Between them they feed workplaces, hospitals, schools, and institutions across dozens of countries, and their decisions on sourcing, sustainability, and service effectively set the operating standard for the entire sector. They run organisations measured in tens or hundreds of thousands of employees, where leadership culture and operational discipline matter as much as menus.

Based in the UK, he leads a business that provides catering and support services across workplaces, healthcare, education, sport, and defence in around thirty countries, with a workforce of roughly 590,000 people.

Under Blakemore, Compass has expanded its North America business and pushed carbon-reduction commitments across its supply chain, including integrating climate intelligence into its US menus and sourcing in 2026. A Few More Leaders Worth Watching

Catering leadership is broader than any single list, and several other figures are shaping the field in ways worth following. Wajdi Al-Ghabban has led Saudi Arabia's national airline caterer, now CATRION, for years as it diversifies well beyond inflight food. Xavier Rossinyol leads Avolta, the global travel retail and food-and-beverage group that includes the Autogrill business. Across the contract majors, divisional leaders such as those running Eurest, Restaurant Associates, and the various Chartwells and Sodexo segments steer operations larger than many standalone companies. The map keeps expanding, especially across Asia, Latin America, and Africa, and I will keep adding verified names over time.

Common Mistakes People Make About Catering Leadership

The most common mistake is assuming catering is simply about food. At the scale these leaders operate, success is driven by logistics, labour, technology, sustainability, and above all by leadership of large and dispersed teams. The menu is the visible part of a far deeper operational and people challenge.

A second mistake is confusing visibility with influence. Many of the most powerful people in catering keep a low public profile, while some of the best-known names lead comparatively small operations. Judging the field by social-media presence misses where the real scale and impact sit, which is why this list weights verified contribution over online fame.

A third mistake is underestimating how quickly leadership changes. In researching this list, roughly a dozen widely cited figures turned out to have moved on, retired, or sold their businesses. Treating a year-old article as current is how outdated information spreads, so every leader here was checked against recent primary sources.

How to Strengthen Leadership in Your Own Catering or Hospitality Team

If you lead a catering, hospitality, or food-services organisation, the lesson from these leaders is that operational excellence rests on team health. The businesses that thrive are the ones where roles are clear, accountability is real, and difficult conversations happen early rather than festering. That is a learnable capability, not a personality trait.

A practical starting point is to get honest about how your leadership team actually works together, where energy is created and where it drains away. Jonno White is a Certified Working Genius Facilitator who runs workshops that map exactly that, helping teams understand the work each person is wired to love and the gaps that quietly slow everything down. You can read more about how offsites can reset a team at leadership retreat locations, and you can start a conversation at jonno@consultclarity.org.

It also helps to learn from leaders outside your immediate sector. For a different angle on purpose-driven leadership, the directory of social enterprise thought leaders is a useful companion read. The common thread across every great catering operation is the same one Jonno White works on with leaders every week, which is the courage to have the right conversation at the right time.

By scale, Dominic Blakemore of Compass Group leads the largest contract caterer in the world, so he sits at the top of most serious conversations. Thierry Delaporte at Sodexo and John Zillmer at Aramark run the other global giants. Influence is broader than scale, though, and figures like Christoph Schmitz in airline catering and the leading independent caterers shape the field in their own segments.

What is the difference between contract catering and event catering?

Contract catering involves running food services on an ongoing basis at a client's site, such as a workplace, hospital, school, or stadium, usually under a multi-year contract. Event catering is project-based, delivering food and hospitality for a specific occasion such as a wedding, premiere, or gala. The largest companies on this list focus on contract catering, while the independent houses specialise in events.

Who are the leading women in catering?

The field includes influential women such as Sophie Bellon, chairwoman of Sodexo, Nathalie Bellon-Szabo and Belinda Oakley at Sodexo Live!, Alison Birdwell at Aramark Sports and Entertainment, Eva Wojtalewski at Chartwells Higher Education, and independent founders including Mary Giuliani, Liz Neumark, Robin Selden, Carla Ruben, Mary Crafts, and Mary Micucci. Women lead some of the most significant operations and creative houses in the industry.

Final Thoughts

The leaders on this list show that catering is one of the world's great, under-recognised industries, feeding people at work, in hospitals and schools, on aircraft, at the biggest events on earth, and at humanitarian scale. They operate across thirteen countries and every corner of the sector, from companies of hundreds of thousands of employees to creative houses built around a single founder's vision.

What unites them is leadership under pressure, the ability to run complex, people-heavy operations while keeping quality and care at the centre. That is the same challenge facing any leader trying to grow a team that delivers. If you want help building that kind of leadership in your own organisation, Jonno White would be glad to talk. You can reach him at jonno@consultclarity.org.
