I learned to accept being hugged by my children when they were infants. Their joy at seeing me enter a room was real and filled with true love and affection and it showed in their embraces. She was even given three different state appointed attorneys because she didn’t get along with them. A couple of people on these comments feel that children are being stolen. I went to a lot of hearings, and had to listen to a lot of other cases while waiting for our hearings, and that simply isn’t my experience at all. I saw two kids being handed back to a mother who had participated in pimping out her daughter, for example, because the woman went to counseling and passed some drug tests (her service plan), just for example. I am sure that CPS, like any collection of humans, makes mistakes, and we should certainly minimize those, but I don’t think it is some villainous organization stealing children. I paused for just a half second at the question, and she judged me a bit. She told me I should have been more certain, but I had not considered it as a permanent placement until that moment. I did feel I owed it to them (my kids) to love them, but try to reunite them until it became clear their parent wasn’t going to step up. My wife and I did take them, and our kids are wonderful, and blameless in this whole process (we did not have the horror stories, just an adjustment period when the kids arrived and we had to learn, as new parents, how to provide structure).

We knew there were a lot of children who age out of the system, and having our own biological kids when that case felt selfish to us (Not judging people having bio-kids). We started with the mindset of adoption, and only wanted legally free placements (parental rights already terminated) and kids over the age of 4. I don’t think there is anything wrong about that adoption mindset. However, I would say anyone in this process will probably have to reset their mindset about what ‘they’ want a couple of times as they go through the process.

There you go! It's a difficult time when you lose a foster child to the biological parents. But that little girl or little boy will be thankful in future for the foster home you created.

It's hard when the birth parents or other family members aren't pulling their weight with their biological child. Or even worse, if there's some level of child abuse happening. The loss of a child who you've been looking after in your loving family is hard.

That's why I've put together my favorite foster care quotes: whether you've been caring for a little one in their first year or a young person in high school. The first thing to remember is how much of a difference you're making to that child. You are a precious part of the child welfare system.

Foster families like you help in so many different ways. With a baby girl or with young adults who need somewhere to sleep at the last minute. You are a safe refuge.
