7 Questions with Felix Ortega

1. What have you found most challenging as a leader of a small or medium enterprise?

In my case, we work for the whole economic ecosystem and all citizens as a municipal company, so our main goal is to align interests for inclusive economic growth in Barcelona.

2. How did you become a leader of an SME? Can you please briefly tell the story?

I have been involved in many projects both public and private ones. I experienced being a manager in different local and public organizations and also leading media stations. I also was a cultural and tech entrepreneur. Each of these roles helped me to understand and guide our current purposes. When it comes to being a CEO of an SME, you have to focus and prioritize how to manage a business and how to be efficient with your company’s communication.

3. How do you structure your work days from waking up to going to sleep?

First of all, it is very important to be coordinated with your team and directors of each area. On a daily basis, I answer the most urgent emails and messages first thing in the morning, check news related to our company, and then I attend all meetings I have scheduled. Eventually, we are doing more events and having more meetings, beyond calls and videoconferences.

4. What's the most recent significant leadership lesson you've learned?

The more you take care of little things the better results you get. Both details and commitment with the organization and employees.

5. What's one book that has had a profound impact on your leadership so far? Can you please briefly tell the story of how that book impacted your leadership?

Creativity, Inc.: Overcoming the Unseen Forces That Stand in the Way of True Inspiration.
Beyond this book and others, I was taught about these topics thanks to being accompanied by a coach.

6. How do you build leadership capacity in an SME?

All is about sharing strategic vision and creating trust among the management team.

7. What is one meaningful story that comes to mind from your time as a leader of an SME so far?

Our outcomes: e.g. Hearing successful stories of people who find jobs or creating new companies thanks to our work.
