7 Questions with James Bennett

1. What have you found most challenging as a leader of a small or medium enterprise?

Maintaining focus on short term goals without missing opportunities for long term growth

2. How did you become a leader of an SME? Can you please briefly tell the story?

I’ve been an entrepreneur since I was 6 years old. I’ve started many solo ventures and ran a few small teams for event marketing. After finding relief from my own anxiety with holistic health practices, I brought together the wearewell team to share the power of holistic wellness with the world. What started as a solopreneur journey developed into a powerful team of driven young entrepreneurs, all eager to create a positive impact on humanity and the planet

3. How do you structure your work days from waking up to going to sleep?

To make a difference, you need to do things differently. Rather than following a 9-5, or hustle every minute of every day, I believe in work life harmony. I have a clear plan of my goals for the week as well as any specific deliverables. I plan dedicated time slots for all of my meetings and Any time that falls outside of that is free time for me to spend either working, learning, living, or resting. I live presently and with confidence that I am doing exactly what I need to be doing at every moment of every day. Since making the switch from hustle 18x7 to presence and flow, my stress and anxiety have plummeted, while my happiness and productivity skyrocketed

4. What's the most recent significant leadership lesson you've learned?

During a personal development workshop I led for my team last week, I learned that No matter the results I prove, the encouragement I preach, or the support I provide, I cannot facilitate change in someone who doesn’t want to see the change in themselves.

5. What's one book that has had a profound impact on your leadership so far? Can you please briefly tell the story of how that book impacted your leadership?

How to win friends and influence people. These books both really helped me understand the nature of human relationships and what causes someone to be admired, trusted, and understood by another human. The fundamental skills shared in this book helped me to justify knowledge I already had, as well as learn new ways to connect to others on a deeper level

6. How do you build leadership capacity in an SME?

Leading by example with your heart first. Recognizing that every individual team member is a human being with values, passions, interests, and quirks. To be a powerful leader you need to understand every team member on a deeper level and adjust your communication and leadership style to suit their individual needs without sacrificing the needs of the group as a whole.

7. What is one meaningful story that comes to mind from your time as a leader of an SME so far?

Hearing from a new team member that her work for the company is her escape from the dark side of life. She had been dealing with some difficult situations and found peace and happiness during our meetings and her specific job duties. Hearing this truly made my heart smile and further emphasized to myself that I am doing the right thing and truly making a positive impact on people's lives
