1. As a leader, how do you build trust with employees, customers and other stakeholders?

The best way to build trust is to be present and accessible. When you're in a meeting with people, especially over video and virtually, you need to BE there. I've found it massively helpful to rely on an AI notetaker so I don't need to keep notes during my meetings. I also make regular check-ins, and we're very clear in our communications with all stakeholders that we live by our values: Integrity, Education, and Fun. Live by your values and listen.

2. What do 'VISION' and 'MISSION' mean to you? And what does it actually look like to use them in real-world business?

Vision is where you want to go, and mission is why you're going there. Being clear with your team, family and friends on what your goals and vision are, and what drives you, keeps you accountable.

3. How can a leader empower the people they're leading?

Clear, consistent communication - and keeping a handle on where things are and what you expect. The old 1-3-1 rule puts the expectation for delivery into their hands: One problem at a time, 3 solutions, and one path forward. We're very clear with our teams that they need to bring us solutions, not just problems, and they need to help solve them. Same with new ideas, improvements, or aspirations. Giving people ownership and expecting their input is key.

4. Who are some of the coaches or mentors in your life who have had a positive influence on your leadership? Can you please tell a meaningful story about one of them?

My Dad was an entrepreneur his whole working career, and made sure I travelled with him to jobs. His company was mostly handyman work - decks, windows, basements, doors - and it was clear that he loved his work, although it was often very hot, cold (we're from MN), or just tough. He always had a great gift of putting people at ease, and I took that to my business.

5. Leadership is often more about what you DON'T do. How do you maintain focus in your role?

We use EOS - the Entrepreneurial Operating System, or Traction - to keep ourselves on task. We track our goals and key performance data in scorecards and have weekly, quarterly, and annual goal meetings.

6. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Everyone plans differently. How do you plan for the week, month and years ahead in your role?

EOS is a big part of how we track our goals and accountabilities, but we also use project management tools, our CRM (HubSpot), and AI tools to keep track of our inputs and progress.

7. What advice would you give to a young leader who is struggling to delegate effectively?

Remember that it takes more than just you to do much of anything. If you're not delegating and setting clear expectations, you're not trusting your team. People are connected to their jobs to the same degree as they feel ownership in outcomes. Be clear on your goals, offer clear direction and accountability, and let your team shine.

It reminds me that leading effectively is like navigating a tricky slope in Snow Rider , you need focus and commitment to stay on track. Clear communication and consistent action build trust, just like mastering those icy turns. Vision and mission are your map! What are your thoughts on Dave's AI notetaker tip?
