1. What have you found most challenging as a leader?

As a leader in the AI/ML DeepTech and Product SaaS Tech startup space, I've encountered various challenges, one being the necessity to stay ahead of rapid technological advancements. While maintaining our forward-thinking vision, we found ourselves in a position where we had to expedite the implementation of several components, shifting our priorities a few quarters ahead. For example, the recent surge in the popularity of GenAI prompted us to reassess our entire roadmap, ensuring that we accelerated the deployment of the most impactful elements. This adaptive approach allows us to balance our visionary goals with the dynamic realities of the tech landscape.

The ability to balance innovation with excellence in execution is a crucial challenge for leaders in this dynamic industry. While constantly pushing the boundaries of technology is essential, it's equally important to deliver on our promises and demonstrate tangible results. This balancing act is a continuous learning process, and I'm still striving to master it.

2. How did you become a leader? Can you please briefly tell the story?

The path to becoming a leader is a continuous journey of learning, self-discovery, and re-engineering. It's about embracing challenges, navigating uncertainties, and finding the strength to persevere. Through it all, empathy, storytelling, and leading by example have been invaluable tools in shaping my leadership style and guiding me toward achieving our shared goals.

The journey to becoming a leader and founding ValueMatrix was not a linear path. I realized that leadership is not about wielding authority or imposing directives; it's about inspiring, guiding, and empowering others to achieve a shared vision. It's about leading with empathy, understanding the needs and aspirations of those around you, and harnessing their collective strength to achieve common goals.

Empathy is the cornerstone of my leadership philosophy. I actively seek to understand the perspectives, challenges, and motivations of my team members, creating an environment where open communication and collaboration flourish. This approach fosters a sense of ownership and engagement, transforming my team into a cohesive unit driven by a shared purpose.

Leading with example has also been a guiding principle. I strive to embody the values I expect from my team: integrity, resilience, and a commitment to excellence. I believe that actions speak louder than words, and by consistently demonstrating these qualities, I hope to inspire others to follow suit.

Early in the journey, I faced the daunting task of presenting our idea to various stakeholders. The goal was not only to deeply understand the problem but also to ensure that our solution was grounded in solid principles.

During a particularly intense meeting, faced with probing questions that tested our vision, I recognized that relying solely on technical jargon was insufficient. To truly capture the attention and support of our audience, I needed to establish a deeper connection, convey emotions, and vividly illustrate the positive impact our product could make.

In that crucial moment, I consciously shifted my approach. I moved away from technical details and embraced a narrative approach, sharing stories that painted a compelling picture of how our technology could transform lives and revolutionize industries. This shift wasn't just a rhetorical strategy; it reflected our genuine belief in the transformative power of our solution.

3. How do you structure your work days from waking up to going to sleep?

My days typically begin with a morning review of critical tasks and priorities, ensuring that I have a clear grasp of the day's objectives. This initial assessment allows me to allocate my time effectively and respond promptly to any urgent matters that may arise.

Most of my day is dedicated to engaging with my team members, and providing support, guidance, and encouragement. This often involves individual check-ins, team meetings, and brainstorming sessions. I believe in fostering an open and collaborative environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute their ideas.

I dedicate a portion of my time to staying informed about the latest trends, developments, and research in the field. This knowledge enables me to make informed decisions regarding our product roadmap, strategic partnerships, and talent acquisition.

However, I've learned that an effective leader is not merely a repository of knowledge but also a hands-on problem solver. When faced with technical challenges, I don't hesitate to roll up my sleeves and delve into the logic and algorithms alongside my team. This demonstrates my commitment to the project and fosters a sense of camaraderie and shared responsibility.

Recently, a sudden technical glitch threatened a project deadline. Mornings were spent strategizing with the tech team, afternoons delving into the intricacies of the code alongside them, and evenings collaborating with our cross-functional teams to ensure a smooth recovery. Flexibility in the workday structure proved essential, showcasing the dynamic nature of startup leadership.

The workday often extends beyond the traditional office hours, as I'm constantly available to address emerging issues and respond to team inquiries. While this flexibility is essential for startup success, I've also learned the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Sometimes, I have my five-year-old doodling on my lap when I am on calls.

4. What's a recent leadership lesson you've learned for the first time or been reminded of?

One of the most valuable leadership lessons I've learned recently came from an unexpected source—a junior developer on our team. During a brainstorming session, this individual proposed an unconventional solution to a persistent issue we had been struggling with. Initially, some team members were hesitant due to the unorthodox nature of the approach.

However, instead of dismissing the idea outright, we decided to adopt the principle of "burden of proof," as emphasized in the Exponential Organizational framework. This approach places the onus on those who doubt an idea to provide evidence against it rather than expecting the proponent to prove its validity.

By embracing this principle, we created an environment where every team member felt empowered to contribute their ideas, regardless of their position or seniority. The junior developer's suggestion, which initially met with skepticism, turned out to be the key to unlocking a breakthrough solution.

This experience reinforced the importance of fostering a culture of open-mindedness and inclusivity within the team. It highlighted the value of encouraging unconventional thinking and empowering individuals at all levels to contribute their perspectives.

The lesson extends beyond the context of problem-solving. It encapsulates the broader notion of embracing exponential thinking, a mindset that recognizes the potential for rapid and transformative change. As leaders, we must cultivate an environment where individuals feel comfortable challenging the status quo and exploring unconventional possibilities.

5. What's one book that has had a profound impact on your leadership so far? Can you please briefly tell the story of how that book impacted your leadership?

Simon Sinek's "Start With Why" has profoundly impacted my leadership philosophy. By emphasizing the importance of understanding and communicating a company's purpose, Sinek challenges leaders to move beyond mere profits and focus on creating a deeper connection with their employees, customers, and the world at large.

Before reading "Start With Why," I often found myself caught up in the day-to-day operations of running a startup, losing sight of the overarching mission that drove our work. Sinek's book served as a wake-up call, reminding me that true success lies in inspiring others to join us on a shared journey of purpose.

Armed with this newfound clarity, I embarked on a mission to instill a sense of purpose within our team. We began by revisiting our company's core values and articulating why we existed beyond mere business transactions. We encouraged open dialogue, allowing team members to share their motivations and aspirations, and fostering a sense of collective ownership over our mission.

The impact was immediate. Team members became more engaged, their work infused with a renewed sense of passion and dedication. We saw a surge in creativity and innovation, as individuals felt empowered to contribute their unique perspectives to achieve our shared purpose.

The ripple effects extended beyond our internal team. Our customers began to connect with us on a deeper level, recognizing our genuine commitment to making a positive impact. We attracted like-minded individuals who shared our values and aspirations, further strengthening our company culture.

This book has become a cornerstone of my leadership approach. It has taught me to lead with authenticity, and to inspire others by connecting our work to a larger purpose that transcends mere financial gains. The book has transformed not only our company but also my understanding of leadership and its profound impact on those we lead.

6. If you could only give one piece of advice to a young leader, what would you say to them?

To a young leader, if I could offer one piece of advice, it would be to embrace challenges with a mindset of continuous learning and resilience. Back in 2008, during the Great Financial Recession, I faced a setback while running my first startup. Despite having built a team of around 75 people, we were reduced to just 4 individuals. It was a daunting experience, but I learned that persistence, coupled with a thick skin, can grant you a superpower—the ability to outlast adversity.

In the face of this significant setback, we chose to rebuild, and with unwavering determination, we transformed our team into a thriving company of 250 people. This journey taught me the invaluable lesson that setbacks are temporary, and the true hallmark of a great leader lies in the ability to bounce back from challenges. The resilience cultivated during those tough times not only enabled us to recover but also paved the way for years of flourishing success before I eventually exited the company.

So, for young leaders navigating their challenges, remember that overcoming hurdles is where profound growth occurs. Approach setbacks not as roadblocks but as opportunities to learn, adapt, and emerge stronger. With persistence and resilience, you can cultivate a superpower that enables you to outlast and ultimately thrive.

7. What is one meaningful story that comes to mind from your time as a leader, so far?

Early on at ValueMatrix, we faced a critical juncture where a key project was at risk of derailing due to unforeseen technical challenges. The team was working tirelessly, but progress seemed elusive. In a pivotal team meeting, I shared a personal experience from my past.

I recounted a time in my career when I was part of a team working on a groundbreaking project that ultimately failed. The failure wasn't due to a lack of effort or skills but rather a failure to communicate effectively and leverage each team member's unique strengths. It was a tough period, but it taught me valuable lessons about collaboration, the importance of open communication, and the necessity of deploying the right resources to address specific challenges.

Drawing from that experience, I encouraged the team at ValueMatrix to openly share their perspectives, challenges, and ideas. We initiated a series of collaborative workshops where team members from different departments collaborated closely. It was during one of these sessions that a breakthrough occurred—ideas merged, and the synergy was palpable.

The project that seemed on the brink of failure not only recovered but exceeded expectations. This experience reinforced my belief in the power of a united and communicative team. It also solidified the importance of sharing personal stories to connect on a deeper level and inspire collective resilience.
